“Memoirs of an Invisible Dan” - My thoughts.
Few characters face the harsh judgment of Dan Humphrey, Chuck wants to change, and Dan becomes a true lonely boy. An interesting episode packed with surprises!
Chuck: I love how Chuck (along with Rufus and Lily) read the whole book, didn’t blame Dan for how he was depicted, and showed up at the event as a good friend. Such a contrast to Blair, Serena and Nate who ignored the book until they were told about its content, blamed Dan for their issues, and didn’t even read the whole thing but just the part that pertains to them. So Dan’s book will be useful after all. Chuck doesn’t want to suffer the same tragic ending of Charlie Trout so he faces himself (Aww, my Chuckles is no longer a coward!), and wants to change. Finally!
Derena: I used to love these two very much back in S1/S2, and despite Dan being kind of rude to Serena in that episode, I feel so confident about Derena right now! They’ve reached a new level in their relationship, which I believe will lead to them finding their back to each other. Dan no longer idealizes Serena. They can finally meet on more equal terms. No more White Knight saving the damsel in distress. No more Serena having to play the role of Serena Van Der Woodsen. No more pressure from being put on a pedestal. She can just be… Serena. And all this happens at a time where Serena is no longer irresponsible, she works hard… She’s moving away from Sabrina. It’s not perfect yet! Dan has to see and learn to love the new Serena, and Serena has to lose her sense of entitlement.
Chair: Aww, I love these two so much and even their short scene was full of sweetness and love. It’s refreshing to see Chuck being so mature and selfless. When a teary Chuck tells Lily that Blair is lost to him, I cried a little too. Yes, she is… for now! They’re no longer inevitable. When they find their way back, it’s because they’ll choose to be together, because they are right for one another.
The book: I think the book will be used as a vehicle of growth for all the characters that were portrayed negatively. Blair is probably the only one who will not benefit from the book since she was idealized by Dan, and didn’t suffer from his harsh judgment. Nate not even having is own character and storyline in the book was priceless!
The royal couple: What’s so perfect about a guy who’s ready to leave his pregnant girlfriend just like that? I’m not enjoying him at all. Too bad he’s in every episode. Didn’t it felt like Chuck was talking about himself when he was talking trust issues with Louis?
Pregnancy: Either Blair lies extremely well, or she doesn’t know that the baby is Louis’s, or the baby is in fact a Grimaldi. I was so sure that she lied in the last episode, but now I’m not so sure anymore. Is it a trick to keep the suspense a bit longer? Will there be a twist that a Grimaldi tampered the results? Or is this storyline about showing us that DNA is overrated and true family is the bonds that exist between two people?
That last scene of Blair lying in bed next to Nate was a callback to Nair in 1.02. Same position, same expression in Blair’s face. I wonder if it’s a sign that she’s lying to Louis. I guess the next episodes will tell!
